Should People Have and Accept Their "Roles?"

People sometimes say that we have "roles" to play in our lives and should just accept what we "have" to do. I think otherwise. If people just accepted doing whatever small things they do then we wouldn't have had all the great people that helped shape our world today. If Thomas Edison had accepted that he couldn't make a light bulb then we wouldn't have the electricity we have today. And if you strive to do more, than you can accomplish more and change your "role."
If you want to see an example of a "role" in life then check this site out.(beware it oddly has one curse word in the middle of all these smart words...) This site explains some of the roles considered for men and women along with what is usually done now. It's shown on a chart lower on the page, but above half of the page.
So we've went from many specific types of people usually doing the same thing in life to people doing whatever they would love to do. You can change your "role" so you don't have to accept it. Why would you accept something when you can easily make better of it then accept it? You can choose your own "role" and change it whenever.
