House of the Scorpion Government Reference

In "House of the Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer, she mentions a a five-legged horse story. This story seems to refer to a certain type of government. The government she that I believe she is refering to is Communism. Raul says much about what and why they make them do certain work. They usually make the kids think that it's "hard but it's fair,"(Farmer 265). She seems to be criticizing this form of government. All of the kids do work and work the same and are rewarded with their share of food because they did their job. If someone didn't do their fair share then they are deprived of food.
Matt happens to comment on how Raul talks about everyone having to do what everyone else does. Farmer used Matt to show that they basically wanted everyone to have something chosen for them and they don't get to do or choose what they want. Communism is basically the same. Everyone does the same thing so that it is supposed to be fair. Farmer is saying that it's not. All they want to do is have everyone do something and not other things like hobbies. Farmer uses Matt to explain that it is just like turning them into zombies or putting chips in their brains to keep them from disobeying.

  1. I agree with you.... I chose communism too. But I used the example of the "five legged horse". Yours is good though and I agree with everything you said.
